Portland Oregon has to be one of the friendliest places that I have ever been. The courtesy that the residents of Oregon extend to each other is awesome. This brings me to my post. Every day I find myself having to merge into stand still traffic. It doesn’t matter if I am getting on the highway at 135th street, 119th street, or making the merge off of 69 highway to I-35. What bothers me is the ruddiness that most people exhibit when I am trying to get on. I have seen people speed up to get ahead of me, I have seen people pretend to not see me so that they don’t have to slow down and then there are the people that just don’t care. I know that we are all trying to get to work and I know that we all hate the traffic that we are sitting in. But seriously, do you really think that slowing down is going to set your commute back that much further?? Once in awhile you will see someone slow down to let you in. When that happens I always give a nice friendly wave to let them know that I appreciate their kind gesture. Every once in awhile, they will wave back. Too often I see drivers let others drivers in and they do not get so much as a head not for their kind deed. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to raise the right hand and give it a quick flick. Heck, sometimes I even raise my coffee cup on salute of my happiness that I am in. I think if people would take some extra time and extend a wave or a smile, our roads would be a much friendlier place to drive.
